The Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Justice Bawole has detailed out his thoughts on the true definition of Leadership.
Featuring on F5 Digital Media’s educative leadership program called Daakye Kanea, Professor Bawole stressed that the results of good leadership must be an empowered set of people who can deliver even without supervision.
He mentioned that leadership in most African countries has depended largely on rules and regulations without any motivation for followers. This he believes has made it difficult to accomplish goals in the absence of a leader.
“The leader cannot be everywhere and at every time so in your absence, it becomes difficult to influence people who are not motivated
“People will sit and ideal yet because there are rules, and they fear you’ll invoke the rules when they see you approach they scramble for work and when you are away they will go back to rest” He emphasized.
He however asserted that making sure that people are empowered to carry out a vision and to also see themselves as part of that vision will ensure that even in the absence of their leader, they will deliver their best to keep the vision in motion.
The experienced Professor explained leadership as the empowerment of others to achieve goals they’ve come to appreciate.
“Leadership is about lifting the people you are above and making sure that they appreciate what you appreciate, that they feel that they can get back to you when they need a backup. A leader must be able to empower others, to accomplish what you see and what they now see and appreciate, making them see things differently in a positive light. A leadership where people are empowered to carry on and see themselves as they form part of the vision.” He explained
